Science Articles Reflection

This article discusses when foetuses are able to feel pain, and hence when it becomes unethical to perform an abortion. This appealed to me very much because of the abortion video that we were played in class, which alerted me to the harm that abortion can do to the foetus and why this is hence bad. I feel that this is where science and ethics meet in policy-making, as many major decisions made by the legislature of various governments that significantly impact the future of the country are extremely reliant on science, and this is ultimately the importance of science to the common man.

Many different opinions are omnipresent in the debate over fetal pain, with some scientists believing that foetuses cannot feel pain, and others believing that foetus start to feel pain from 21 to 27 weeks, however no conclusive scientific evidence has emerged to prove any standpoint. Ultimately, I feel that such scientific debate is beneficial for both the scientific community as a whole, and the general public, because this is the type of science that makes it so much more relevant in today’s society. Science is truly integral to a cohesive and effective society.
